Ever wonder where to find Vancouver’s best Taiwanese beef noodle soup or pan-fried Shanghainese bun?
Your search may be over. Diners’ Choice winners of the 2013 Chinese Restaurant Awards
were announced earlier this weeks. More than 34,000 ordinary Metro
Vancouver diners voted for hundreds of restaurants. The result: An
amazing cheat sheet for foodies eager to experience the city’s best
Chinese cuisine – both familiar favourites and off-the-beaten-path
finds.
Winners were selected in 18 different categories,
everything from best hot pot to best dim sum. The Best Taiwanese Beef
Noodle prize was claimed by Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodle (locations
in Richmond and Vancouver), which made its debut in the Lower Mainland
after winning three championships in the Taipei International Beef
Noodle Festival. Meanwhile Best Pan-Fried Shanghainese Bun went to Top
Shanghai Cuisine in Richmond, for its exactingly authentic take on the
regional delicacy.
Other notable highlights include the award for Best Chinese Barbecue. Richmond’s
BBQ Master was recognized for their barbecue pork belly and cha siu
(pork roast), dishes which attract discerning diners from all over
Vancouver, selling out regularly.
This is the fifth instalment of the Chinese Restaurant Awards,
which aims to help Vancouver diners discover the amazing – and widely
overlooked – culinary scene in their own backyard. No less an authority
than the New York Times declared that suburb of Richmond has “the best
Chinese food outside of China.” Indeed, along Richmond’s Alexandra Road
(a.k.a Food Street) hundreds of restaurants representing cuisine from
all parts of China jam the space of just a few blocks.
The People’s Choice Awards are followed on February 26 by the
Critics’ Choice Awards, where the pros weigh in on the best Chinese
dishes in the city.
