(Vancouver, BC – March 2nd, 2016) – Yesterday’s finale to the 8th Annual Chinese Restaurant Awards (CRA) marked another year of outstanding Chinese culinary achievement that included a first-of-its-kind East Meets West gala dinner with Michelin-starred chefs, Diners’ Choice Awards, Social Media Choice Awards and the much-coveted Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards.

The Awards Ceremony, held at the River Rock Show Theatre, and recognizing the winners of the Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards and Social Media Choice Awards, was the culmination of a year-long process of defining and celebrating the ‘Best in Chinese Cuisine’ in Metro Vancouver. The Diners’ Choice Awards, which received more than 34,000 votes cast by eager diners, were announced this past February. All Awards’ tabulations were audited by Mrs. Jacqueline Lai, CPA.

Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards:
For the eighth year, four fearless critics selflessly gave up their evenings and weekends to dine out at Chinese restaurants across Metro to determine the best Signature Dishes. The Awards Panel this year included: Stephen Wong (cofounder of CRA, respected Chef and recognized Chinese food authority), Lee Man (food writer – Vancouver Magazine, Wine Access, Northwest Best Places, Time Out and Eat Magazine), Brendan Mathews (former restaurant critic Richmond Review, contributor to Vancouver Magazine) and Foodie Yau (a travel writer and anonymous restaurant reviewer who writes for various publications including Gourmet Vancouver). The task was a daunting one as each year these experienced and sophisticated palates have to determine if a new restaurant or dish is ‘award-worthy,’ or if a past award-winner has perhaps slipped. It’s a tough job entailing many tasting hours followed by intense discussion and notes comparison. You’ll see some surprises and new names amongst this year’s winners reflecting the dynamic nature of Metro’s Chinese culinary scene.

Social Media Choice Awards:
A new component, from the 2015 awards, was the recognition of the powerful role played by social media in reflecting, and to some degree determining, the tastes of local diners. CRA carefully researched the saturated social food media field and selected four individuals who had demonstrated exceptional knowledge of Chinese cuisine and its regional expressions as well as being acknowledged by their peers as among the best. These social media judges played a vital role in inspiring the dining public to approach restaurants and iconic dishes with a more critical eye. Through posting about their tasting journey on their social media networks, the four judges engaged the public in lively discussions about dishes and restaurants – adding to the collective knowledge about each. The inaugural social media judges of the 2016 awards are: Sherman Chan, Emily Cheng, Jesse Tsao, and Cathy Zhou.

East Meets West:
This year marked a milestone for the CRA. As part of the celebration of its 8th year, the CRA produced with Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver, the East Meets West, a pair of exclusive dinners held this past January at Market by Jean-Georges in the Hotel. Michelin-starred Chefs Samuel Lee Sum and Christophe Moret from the Shangri-La Hotel, Paris were joined by Market’s own chef, Ken Nakano and international award-winning pastry chef Thomas Haas, to create an eight-course, cross culinary-culture dinner.

Canadian Food Product of the Year:
Each year CRA recognizes a Canadian food product-of-excellence that has been incorporated into Chinese cuisine. This year’s winner is B.C. Geoduck by Underwater Harvesters’ Association. BC Geoduck has earned an international reputation for its great flavor. The Underwater Harvesters’ have worked tirelessly to promote B.C. as the globe’s leading supplier of quality geoducks.

CRA Scholarship:
In 2014, CRA established a scholarship fund at Vancouver Community College to support students in financial need to attend the College’s Asian Culinary Arts Department. To date three students have attended with aid from CRA. We are pleased to announce that this year we are partnering with BC Hospitality Foundation to ensure funding through spring 2018.

The Chinese Restaurant Awards have much to celebrate in its auspicious eighth year. The Chinese culinary scene in Vancouver continues to evolve, developing a reputation as one of the best places in the world for Chinese cuisine outside of China. Chinese cuisine is influencing chefs of other cultures, ways of cooking and flavour profiles across the Lower Mainland. Young people interested in a culinary career are taking their certificate at VCC’s Asian culinary program. All of this has either come about, or increased, in the eight years since the Awards’ inception.

(Vancouver, BC – February 1st, 2016) – The votes are in and the people have spoken. More than 34,100 votes were cast by eager diners for this year’s Peoples’ Choice Awards at the Chinese Restaurant Awards. The results were tabulated and audited by Jacqueline Lai, CPA.

Some of the outcomes could be considered foregone conclusions – such as the perennial winner of the ‘Best BBQ Shop’ category – Richmond’s H.K. BBQ Master, who has won the category every year since the beginning. Other returning winners include:

‘Best Cantonese Restaurant’ – Bamboo Grove, Richmond
‘Best Hunan Restaurant’ – Alvin Garden, Burnaby
‘Best Bakery Shop’ – Saint Germain Bakery with 3 locations in Metro Vancouver
‘Best Food Court Stall’ – Bubble Waffle Café with 3 locations in Metro Vancouver

There are also quite a few new names in the winners’ circle – restaurants that have opened fairly recently and have quickly become favourites – Memory Garden, Mango Yummy and Kongee Dinesty are among the first-time winners this year.

Another new aspect of this year’s awards was the introduction of ‘Iconic Dishes’ to the Diners’ Choice Awards. These are regional dishes that were chosen by our Social Media Judges because their preparation is iconic to a particular place. We asked voters to try them and engage in online discussions about the merits, history and execution of each dish and vote for their favourite interpretation of it. The response was overwhelmingly positive. People love to discuss their food and share ‘find’s and ‘faves.’ The five Iconic Dishes are:

Sichuan – Water-Boiled Fish
Taiwan – Braised Pork Rice
Hong Kong – Roast Duck (one of the most hotly debated categories)
Shanghai – Drunken Chicken
South China – Mango Sago

All the winners will be invited to the Awards Ceremony at River Rock Show Theatre on Wednesday, March 2nd. And now, the news you’ve all been waiting for, the 2016 Chinese Restaurant Awards Diners’ Choice Awards – the envelope please.

(Vancouver, BC – December 7th, 2015) – The number eight is considered highly auspicious in Chinese culture. That’s because the spoken word for ‘eight’ (baat) sounds like the word meaning ‘good fortune,’ and 2016 marks lucky year eight for the Chinese Restaurant Awards (CRA). Through seven years, more than 130,000 votes cast, innumerable dishes devoured and judged; the CRA has raised awareness of the excellent Chinese cuisine available in Metro Vancouver and celebrates its important influence on Vancouver’s much-lauded dining scene.

Starting in 2008, with a small group of dedicated food critics, the event has grown in size and stature attracting world-wide media attention and capturing the votes and palates of thousands of Lower Mainlanders. In addition to key features such as the very popular Diners’ Choice Awards, Social Media Awards and Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards, this year’s celebration also includes fundraising events and culinary star power – two exclusive East Meets West Dinners at The Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver with Michelin-starred chefs from Paris and the annual Scotiabank Feast of Fortune Charity Gala with local award winning Chinese chefs. Both will raise funds for Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. This year, CRA will boast a new, mobile-friendly website that will make voting even easier and, as in past years, all voting will be audited by certified auditor.

Diners’ Choice Awards:

Designed to celebrate those dishes and restaurants the general public love, the Diners’ Choice Awards involve a two-step process where members of the public first nominate their favourites in a number of categories and then later, vote on the nominees. This year we’ve added five new dish categories:

Sichuan Water-Boiled Fish, Hong Kong-style Roast Duck, Shanghai-style Drunken Chicken, Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice and Mango Pomelo/Grapefruit Sago. Our Social Media panel will be active on all platforms engaging the public in discussions about these new dishes. In 2015, the Diners’ Choice Awards received 33,759 votes – a seven-fold increase over those received in the event’s first year. Nominating and voting takes place on the CRA website www.Chineserestaurantawards.com

Social Media Choice Awards:

Four popular foodies from Vancouver’s very active Chinese social media community will taste and judge five iconic dishes at a variety of restaurants. Each judge is highly regarded for their knowledge of the history of the dish, its components and flavour profile. These awards are fascinating to members of the Mainstream community who may not be familiar with some of these dishes. This year’s social media panel includes: Sherman Chan (Sherman’s Food Adventures), Emily Cheng (Miss Vancouver Piggy), Jesse Tsao (My Van Life), and Cathy Zhou (active on Weibo and WeChat).

Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards:

The distinguished panel headed by CRA co-founder Stephen Wong also includes Lee Man, Brendon Matthews and popular restaurant critic/food writer Foodie Yau. These people deserve a medal for all the dishes they consume and restaurants they visit over the course of a year. For 2016, they have committed to judging 10 signature dishes, many of them new dishes that have not been judged before.

Important Dates:

Dec.7 – 13, 2015 nominations open for Diners’ Choice Awards

Dec. 14, 2015 – Jan.31,2016 voting for Diners’ Choice Awards

(Vancouver, B.C., Canada – April 15th, 2015) After months of secret tasting, the judges of the 7th Annual Chinese Restaurant Awards share their decision with the public in today’s announcement of the 2015 Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards and Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards. The results will be included in the new Chinese dining guide that many Vancouverites and tourists have come to appreciate and trust.

————
The team behind the new Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards consists of frequent restaurant-goers: Sherman Chan (shermansfoodadventures.com), Joyce Lam (vanfoodies.com), Jesse Tsao (myvanlife.com), and Chole Wang
(vandiary.com). They assumed the role of experts for three months, scrutinizing five dishes that are part of the 2015 Diners’ Choice Awards categories.

Inspired by the Awards’ professional food critics, the bloggers visited many restaurants and shared their opinions with one
another. Their gastronomic adventure led to the following results: Yue Delicacy in Richmond won the award for Best Har Gow. Long’s Noodle House on Main Street received the award for Best Five-Spice Beef Wrapped in Chinese Pancake. Kalvin’s Szechuan Restaurant on Victoria Drive, one of Vancouver’s first authentic Taiwanese restaurants, won Best
Three-Cup Chicken. Shanghai Elan Restaurant in Burnaby’s Crystal Mall makes the Best Tea-Smoked Duck. Last but not least, Best Original Flavour Egg Waffle goes to Bubble Waffle Café in Aberdeen Centre, also the winner of Best Food Court Stall in the Diners’ Choice Awards.

Since completing the difficult tasks as a team, the bloggers have a new-found appreciation for the work done by the Awards’ food critics. Stephen Wong, Lee Man, Brendon Matthews, and Foodie Yau went through six months of tasting starting in fall 2014, with the goal of finding the restaurants that befitted the ten Signature Dish Awards. Kirin Restaurants won the heart of the judges with their traditional Steamed Prawn and Pork Dumpling Topped with Flying Fish Roe. Chef Tony Seafood Restaurant’s east-meets-west Black Truffles, Pork, and Shrimp Dumplings enticed the critics with the sweetness of the shrimp and the earthy aroma of the black truffles. The chef’s creative approach to a traditional dish is highly praised by judges, making the restaurant a winner in this year’s Awards.

Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie in historic Chinatown received similar praise from the critics on its Shao Bing with Cumin Lamb Sirloin. The chefs at the hip restaurant redesigned the traditional pork shao bing by stuffing the toasty sesame bun with
smoky aromatic lamb, cumin seeds, and pickled red onions. Daisy Garden Restaurant, an older establishment in Chinatown, received recognition based on its traditional juicy B.B.Q Duck. The wide range of winners demonstrates the Awards’ determination in creating an all-inclusive dining guide that celebrates both the old and the new. The ballots of
the Critics’ Choice and Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards were officially audited by EY Canada.

The organizer of the Chinese Restaurant Awards has worked with different professionals in the culinary industry to bring the public surprises year after year. For example, the Signature Dish Dining Festival in 2012 gave diners the opportunity to
try the tasting menus of various restaurants at a reasonable price, and, in 2014, the Chinese Master Chefs Gold Medal Dinner united the local masters with celebrity chefs from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai to push Chinese fine dining to new heights. The Chinese Restaurant Awards Scholarship was introduced in 2014 to support students who are
passionate about Asian cuisine in Vancouver Community College’s culinary program.

The successful programs of the Awards are made possible with the support of premium sponsors, such as Hennessy Cognac, which presented Peninsula Seafood Restaurant with the Top Cognac Service and Sales Award in celebration of Hennessy’s 250th anniversary and in recognition of Chinese restaurants’ contribution to the cognac industry. In 2015, the Awards will continue to work closely with chefs and critics in order to present more exciting programs on its eighth anniversary.

The Chinese Restaurant Awards wishes to thank the following sponsors: Alberta Canola Producers Commission, EY Canada, Hennessy Cognac, Heineken, Amoy Food limited, Anchor Foods International Limited, Frobisher International Enterprise Ltd., CityTV, OMNI Television, Taiyangbao.ca and Vandiary.com and the partners view the full list

The organizer of Chinese Restaurant Awards is pleased to announce the results of the 2015 Diners’ Choice Awards. This year, 33,759 votes were cast over 34 days, starting on February 17, in celebration of Chinese New Year. This is a whopping 42% increase over the 2014 result of 19,612 votes over 30 days. The increase shows that the public has been highly engaged in the process, giving the Chinese Restaurant Awards a pat on the back for successfully building a community that encourages communication between food lovers and Chinese culinary professionals.

Thanks to a thriving Chinese culinary industry, Metro Vancouver has provided locals and tourists with the opportunity to sample authentic dishes from different parts of the Chinese-speaking world in one area, without the hassle of distant travel. The public’s enthusiastic response has co-created a community that not only raises the standard of local Chinese restaurants but also inspires the Awards to continue developing a dining guide that foodies at home and abroad trust.

The public’s growing interest has always been the motivating force behind the Chinese Restaurant Awards’ ongoing development. The newly introduced Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards, for example, encourage diners to actively participate in the community. They will be able to compare their choice of winners with the critics’ and bloggers’ favourites on April 15, when the results of the Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards and Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards are revealed. The ballots were submitted to the awards’ official auditor EY Canada on March 20.

This year the winners of the five new Diners’ Choice Awards categories include industry veterans and newcomers. The winner for Best Har Gow is Kirin Restaurants, a well-recognized institution in Vancouver’s Chinese culinary scene and also the winner in the Best Dim Sum Restaurant category. The award for Best Tea-Smoked Duck goes to Dinesty Dumpling House, also the winner in the Best Shanghainese Restaurant category. The ever-popular Pearl Castle Café takes home the award of Best Three-Cup Chicken. First-time winners Shanghai Morning Restaurant and Bubble Queen, both located in Richmond, won the hearts of many with their specialty dishes. The former makes the Best Five-Spice Beef Wrapped in Chinese Pancake, and the latter whips up a scrumptious batter that won for Best Original-Flavour Egg Waffle.

Other notable mentions in the results includes Chang’ An in Downtown Vancouver (Best Fine Dining Restaurant), Maji Taiwanese Stir Fry on Alexandra Road (Best Taiwanese Restaurant/BBT Café), and Bubble Waffle Café at Aberdeen Centre (Best Food Court Stall). All three winners have been in operation for less than two years, but their popularity started growing soon after their grand opening. Vancouverites have been demonstrating their enthusiasm towards new regional restaurants with countless online reviews and long line-ups. The announcement of the upcoming Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards and Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards will add new excitement to their quest for superb Chinese food.

(Vancouver, B.C., Canada – February 10th, 2015) If the number seven signifies a complete cycle, the team behind the Chinese Restaurant Awards has entered into their seventh year with quite the contrary mindset. In 2015, the new Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards are being introduced to embrace growth, engagement, and sharing. Together with the Awards team of professional food critics and the general public, four top-ranking local food bloggers have been invited to create a new comprehensive dining guide.

“We understand the importance of incorporating different voices,” says Craig Stowe, Chinese Restaurant Awards Founding Director. “Vancouver’s top food bloggers are passionate, and their unique expressions will encourage both locals and visitors to explore the city’s rich Chinese culinary scene.”

Since 2012, well-recognized regional dishes have been added annually to the Diners’ Choice Awards as rotating categories. This year, the Awards have invited two English and two Chinese bloggers to dissect five dishes in the new categories with the public. Sherman Chan (shermansfoodadventures.com), Joyce Lam (vanfoodies.com), Jesse Tsao (myvanlife.com), and Chole Wang (vandiary.com) will find their favourite places that make the Best Har Gow, Best Five-Spice Beef Wrapped in Chinese Pancake, Best Tea-smoked Duck, Best Three-Cup Chicken, and Best Original-Flavour Egg Waffle. The restaurants that receive the most votes will be the winners of the Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards.

The first of the five new dishes, Har Gow, or steamed shrimp dumpling, is a must-order Dim Sum item for anyone new to the yum cha experience. Good-quality Har Gow has a thin translucent wrapping that can hold a generous amount of diced shrimp. The delicateness of this bite-size dumpling is quite a contrast to the finger-licking Five Spice Beef Wrapped in Chinese Pancake. Served in Northern Chinese and Taiwanese restaurants as an appetizer, the roll has thin slices of slow-cooked beef shank wrapped in a flaky pancake with crispy green onion or cilantro.

In the past year, the Szechuan classic Tea-smoked Duck has been gaining popularity among local chefs. Variations of the dish have been appearing on the menus of different regional restaurants. The elaborate process of hot-smoking a marinated duck over tea leaves and twigs makes it a challenge to a chef’s skill and patience. The Three-Cup Chicken, in contrast, is easier to prepare, but it does not lack variety or flavour. The hearty Taiwanese adaption of this Jiangxi dish has made it a household name and a regular on bubble teahouse menus. Similarly, the Original-Flavour of Hong Kong Egg Waffle, or eggette, can be found in dessert houses, cafés, and food courts in Metro Vancouver despite its street origin. It is so popular that more people are attempting to make the doughy-centered crunchy waffle at home to satisfy their craving.

From February 10 to 18th, the public can nominate their favourite establishments online (votedinerschoice.com) for the twenty-one categories in the Diners’ Choice Awards. Last year, 19,612 votes were cast over four weeks. Best BBQ Shop has returned this year due to popular demand. The 2015 voting period is February 19 to March 22, and the results of the Diners’ Choice Awards will be announced on March 23.

Professional food critics Stephen Wong, Lee Man, Brendon Matthews, and Foodie Yau have been the backbone of the Critics’ Choice Awards signature dishes categories, and they have been gathering for undercover tastings since September 2014. Their ballots will be tallied at the end of March, along with the food bloggers’ votes. The results of both the Critics’ Choice and the Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards will be announced on Wednesday, April 15. All votes are verified by EY Canada, the official auditor of the Chinese Restaurant Awards.

A China & Canada Chinese Culinary Collaboration that Breaks Ground

On the evening of April 23, an unprecedented culinary collaboration instilled wonder and admiration in the invited guests who attended Chinese Master Chefs’ Gold Medal Dinner. Five internationally acclaimed chefs from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, who boasted Michelin stars and Cordons Bleu wins, joined forces with four local Chinese Masters Chefs and two celebrity guest chefs to create an elaborate feast at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver.

In 2013, Chinese Master Chefs was introduced to celebrate the
outstanding achievements and superb mastery of eight Chinese chefs in
Metro Vancouver. The plan to extend the program beyond the Canadian
border, however, had been brewing from the very beginning.

“It
took the team more than two years to search for the right gastronomic
elites outside of Canada to be part of Chinese Master Chefs,” said Craig
Stowe, Chinese Restaurant Awards’ Founding Director. “The Gold Medal
Dinner is a world-class collaboration that will change Canadians’
perception of Chinese food. We are honoured to have the culinary
heavyweights coming to Vancouver and working with the Chinese Master
Chefs in an event that strengthens the ties between China and Canada.”

The
all-star team from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai included
executive chefs Huang Wuhun (H.L. Peninsula Catering Group, a member of
Commanderies Cordon Bleus de France), Mok Kit Keung (Shang Palace,
Kowloon Shangri-La, two Michelin stars), Lau Yiu Fai (Yan Toh Heen,
InterContinental Hong Kong, one Michelin star), Joseph Tse (Above &
Beyond, Hotel ICON, CondéNast Traveller Magazine UK “The Best New
Restaurant in 2012: Hotel Tables”), and Wu Wenbin (yè shanghai, one
Michelin star).

The Vancouver Chinese Master Chefs’
collaborators were executive chefs Andy Lau (Sea Harbour Seafood
Restaurant), Tony Luk (The Jade Seafood Restaurant), Ming Yeung (Bamboo
Grove), and Anthony Leung (Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant), no
strangers to the culinary spotlight and refined Chinese cuisine.

Each
chef created his masterpiece using some of Canada’s finest ingredients,
such as Alberta Beef, Alberta Akakuro-buta Pork, Northern Divine
Caviar, Fraser River white sturgeon, BC organic chicken, and BC geoduck.
Together they created a sumptuous nine-course meal that complemented
the unique cooking style of each chef. Executive chef Ned Bell and
pastry chef Bruno Feldeisen of the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver were
also invited to contribute to the dinner with their Chinese-inspired
creations. As the Canadian Chef Ambassor of the event, Ned Bell prepared
two splendid Albert beef and Alberta pork dishes that demonstrated the
diverse talent and global thinking of eminent chefs in Canada.

In
an award presentation, the four local master chefs and the five master
chefs from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai were presented the Chinese
Master Chefs awards plaques, with the Ammolite sponsored by World Duty
Free Group and Korite International, to honour their outstanding
international achievements. The 21-year-old tenor pop vocalist Cody
Karey saluted the culinary heroes with a powerful and touching solo.
Throughout the evening, guests were treated to a mix of live piano and
erhu performances, sponsored by Tom Lee Music and Steinway and Sons. A
live auction that raised $14,500 for the Chinese Master Chefs
Scholarship ended the Gold Medal Dinner on a high note. Students who are
passionate about entering the Asian culinary program at Vancouver
Community College will benefit from the groundbreaking collaboration
that changed the history of Chinese cuisine in Canada.

Chinese Restaurant Awards wishes to thank the following sponsors and

CityTV Breakfast Television’s Dawn Chubai and OMNI
TV’s Bowen Zhang emceed the awards presentation, charming 250 guests
from the trade, culinary and media industries. During the reception,
guests enjoyed delicious canapés provided by previous Critics’ Choice
Signature Dish Awards winners and current Diners’ Choice Awards winner.
The selections included Steamed Brown Sugar Rice Cake (The Jade Seafood
Restaurant), Baked Lemon BBQ Pork Pie (Dynasty Seafood Restaurant), and
Signature Taiwanese Snacks (Bubble World).

This year, judging
criteria for Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards were modified, making
it more difficult for restaurants to be included in the Awards’ dining
guide. The judges had many debates and tastings before submitting their
votes to EY Canada for the official audit.

In Metro Vancouver,
the number of categories was reduced, but Dynasty Seafood Restaurant was
able to defeat other contenders in two categories with its Geoduck Two
Ways and Hand-Shredded Chicken with Bamboo Cane. The chef’s creative use
of the entire geoduck, including the siphon and body meat in making the
Deep-Fried Geoduck Quenelles and the Sliced Geoduck Deep Fried with
Basil, was especially impressive to the judges.

Lai Leung Kee
Delicatessen, a hidden gem in the food court of Richmond’s Empire
Centre, caught the critics’ attention with its Braised Beef Briskets and
Tendon. The little food stall whips up big flavour in the tender juicy
briskets and tendon that instantly fall apart in the mouth. This is a
good indication that the chef has mastered the secret of making this
popular Cantonese dish.

In Greater Toronto, Fung Lam Court’s
Dungeness Crab Baked with Rum, served with bread and White Pepper Pig
Stomach Milk Soup wowed the judges’ discerning taste buds. The critics
were pleased with the chef’s bold move in presenting an east-meets-west
crab dish on a diverse menu. Aroma Bakery in Scarborough made it to the
critics’ list with its flaky and soft traditional Cantonese Wife Cake,
also known as Sweetheart Cake. Aroma Bakery was the least expected
winner, but it shows the steadfast critics were serious about finding
the best Chinese food.

This year, the new award Canadian Food
Product of the Year was created in an effort to honour and recommend the
best food producer in Canada. Northern Divine Caviar took home the
title with its certified organic sustainable caviar produced from Fraser
River White Sturgeon in BC’s Sunshine Coast. The outstanding quality of
the luxury product is also recommended by Sea Choice and Monterey Bay
Aquarium’s Seafood Watch as the “Green” Best Choice.

Adding to the excitement was a surprise appearance at the ceremony by internationally renowned executive chefs Huang Wuhun (H.L. Peninsula Catering Group, a member of Commanderies Cordon Bleus de France), Mok Kit Keung (Shang Palace, Kowloon Shangri-La, two Michelin stars), Lau Yiu Fai (Yan Toh Heen, InterContinental Hong Kong, one Michelin star), Joseph Tse (Above & Beyond, Hotel ICON, CondéNast Traveller Magazine UK “The Best New Restaurant in 2012: Hotel Tables”), and Wu Wenbin (yè shanghai, one Michelin star), to everyone’s delight. They flew all the way to accept medals for their extraordinary achievements in the international culinary arena as Chinese chefs.

The Chinese Restaurant Awards
ceremony came to an end with the exhilarating announcement of the
collaboration between the five internationally acclaimed chefs and four
local Chinese Master Chefs at the Chinese Master Chefs’ Gold Medal
Dinner 2014. To be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver in the
evening of April 23, the exclusive event will change conventional
perceptions of Chinese cuisine in Canada, creating a positive impact on
the local Chinese culinary industry.

The Chinese
Restaurant Awards wishes to thank the following sponsors and partners:
OpenRoad Auto Group, Alberta Agricultural and Rural Development, Alberta

( VANCOUVER, B.C. – March 10, 2014 ) The growing number of voters participating in the annual Diners’ Choice Awards is a good indication that Vancouverites are becoming more and more enthusiastic about honouring the best Chinese food in the Lower Mainland. The votes are not only a reflection of today’s dining trend but also the key in making the Chinese Restaurant Awards a reliable dining guide in Canada. This year, EY Canada is the official auditor that verified the 19,612 votes cast in the past four weeks, a 14% increase in votes over 2013.

After more than twelve months of anticipation, diners were eager to
nominate and vote for their annual favourite restaurants. The
competition heated up about halfway into the voting period when several
restaurants were in the lead. The top three in each category were
announced daily on the awards’ website, making the voting process more
exciting and transparent.

Max Noodle House won the title
of Best Wonton Noodles. Diners were impressed by the chef’s skill in
balancing the combination of soup, noodles, and wonton all in one bowl.
S&W Pepper House won Best Sichuan Boiled Beef by maintaining the
authenticity of a classic dish. Bamboo Grove, the oldest Chinese
restaurant in Richmond, knows a thing or two about making the Best Honey
Garlic Spareribs, a delicacy that was invented right here in Canada.

The
Peninsula Seafood Restaurant at Oakridge Centre quickly won diners’
hearts with its outstanding performance, after only four months of
operation. The restaurant took first place in the Best Service and Best
Fine Dining Restaurant categories. In the Best Egg Tart category, Lido
Restaurant was the top contender throughout the competition. It won the
title by carefully crafting the Hong Kong-style pastry that is adored by
many. Last but not least, the title of Best Taiwanese Bubble Tea was
bestowed on Dragon Ball, a small café at the corner of West King Edward
Avenue and Oak Street that has gained a loyal following.

All
winners of the Diners’ Choice Awards will be invited to the opulent
awards ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver on April 23. The
judging panels of the Critics Choice Awards in Metro Vancouver and
Greater Toronto have finished their tasting journey and summited their
ballots to EY Canada for audition. The results will also be announced at
the ceremony.

(Canada) The Chinese Restaurant Awards kick-start 2014 with the goal of elevating and refining the much-loved authoritative dinning guide. After five years of success, the Chinese Restaurant Awards continue to develop exciting new programs that encourage aficionados to explore deeper into the ever-changing Chinese culinary scene in Metro Vancouver and Greater Toronto and challenge the well-honed palates of food critics to recommend the best signature dishes in 2014.

“As the forerunner of promoting Chinese cuisine in Canada,
we have dedicated ourselves in staying up-to-date with the industry,
both at home and abroad,” said Craig Stowe, Chinese Restaurant Awards’
Founding Director. “We’ve been persistent at bringing the public a
well-rounded dinning guide that highlights the crème-de-la-crème in the
past five years. The public’s phenomenal support has pushed us to raise
our game.”

This year, the categories of Diners’ Choice
Awards in Greater Vancouver have expanded from 18 to 20, including six
new awards: Best Wonton Noodles, Best Honey Garlic Spareribs, Best
Sichuan Boiled Beef, Best Bubble Tea, Best Egg Tart, and Best Service
Restaurant. The public is invited to nominate their favourites from
February 3 to 9 and vote for the best from February 10 to March 9 on
www.ChineseRestaurantAwards.com The results will be announced on March
10.

Many diners had written to the Chinese Restaurant
Awards requesting the return of Best Service Restaurant in 2014. Their
candid experiences make them the most qualified critics for the
category. They are also very enthusiastic about voting for each year’s
new selected dishes based on regions, popularity, and ingredients.
Wonton noodles, for example, have been a popular comfort food in
Guangzhou since the late Qing Dynasty (1890s). It is one of the most
recognizable Cantonese dishes outside China, yet only the most skilled
chef can perfect the combination of soup, wonton, and noodles. Sichuan
Boiled Beef, developedby the late master chef Fan Ji-an in the 1930s, is
equally challenging to recreate: poaching thinly sliced beef to
perfection in a spicy aromatic broth looks easier said than done. Honey
Garlic Spareribs is a Canadian invention that one rarely finds on a menu
in China. Bubble tea and egg tarts are popular delights that have been
satisfying the sweet tooth of Vancouverites.

The Chinese
Restaurant Awards also have taken a drastic step in reducing the
twenty-five best signature dishes of Critics’ Choice Signature Dish
Awards to ten. Vancouver-based food critics Stephen Wong, Lee Man,
Brendon Mathews, and Foodie Yau have been the Awards’ leading judges
for many years, and they have taken on the new mission to select the
spectacular from the best. Handed with a set of new rules, the Vancouver
judging panel has began a rigorous tasting journey since the summer of
2013.

Last year, the Critics’ Choice Signature Dish
Awards were introduced in Greater Toronto, based on the growing demand
of Chinese food in major Canadian cities. After receiving positive
feedback from the public, the Chinese Restaurant Awards will once again
team up with Toronto-based food critics Jen Chan, Jennifer Kwan, Renée
S. Suen, and Charles Yu to search for the 10 best signature dishes.
Winners of the Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards for both cities
will be announced on April 23 in a glittering awards ceremony at Four
Seasons Hotel Vancouver.
