It was quite the spiffy affair, held in the main theatre at<br \/>\nRichmond&rsquo;s River Rock Casino. And we loved being able to hop on the <b>Canada Line<\/b> to be <b>whisked from downtown<\/b> <b>in under 25 min<\/b>. Once you&rsquo;re at Bridgeport Station it&rsquo;s an easy walk across a skyway to the casino.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hiredbelly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Canada-Line-Tim-Pawsey1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hiredbelly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Canada-Line-Tim-Pawsey1-300x225.jpg\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1546\" title=\"Canada-Line-Tim-Pawsey\" height=\"225\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Richmond to Vancouver in under 25 mins, Tim Pawsey photo <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">No surprise that the awards are held in Richmond, widely regarded as<b> the vortex of Chinese dining in Greater Vancouver<\/b>&mdash;if not in North America. In fact, there was no shortage of accolades trotted out from observers at home and abroad praising <b>Richmond&rsquo;s prowess<\/b>.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Working through the sheer volume of winners requires some effort. The<br \/>\nvoting starts with an online survey where consumers nominate their<br \/>\nfavourite restaurants. That results in the <b>Diners&rsquo; Choice Awards<\/b>, concluded at the end of 2010. And they represent a pretty good nucleus of the better Chinese restaurants in the region.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">For the more authoritative <b>Critics&rsquo; Awards, <\/b>a team<br \/>\nof journalists, chefs and others well versed in the Lower Mainland&rsquo;s<br \/>\nvibrant Chinese dining scene tasted some 500 entries over five months to<br \/>\n<b>specifically identify the best chefs and the dishes they produce<\/b>.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">In the last couple of years, CRA has focused on specific ingredients to determine the categories where merit is due. As<b> <\/b>awards<b> judging chair Stephen Wong <\/b>explained<br \/>\nto me, when Chinese diners discuss just where to go for a meal the<br \/>\nconversation often revolves around who does the best scallop, chicken or<br \/>\ngeoduck dish&mdash;as opposed to the broader appeal of the restaurant itself.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">The only real challenge: just like some voluminous restaurant menus,<br \/>\nit takes time to determine exactly just who the most worthy winners<br \/>\nreally are.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">&nbsp;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hiredbelly.com\/hsbc-chinese-restaurant-awards-metro-vancouvers-best-of-the-best\/1505\" target=\"_blank\">Read more <\/a><br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">&nbsp;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">&nbsp;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Tim Pawsey We went to the HSBC Chinese Restaurant Awards this week.
