While it&rsquo;s a thrill and a<br \/>\nhalf to be called out for an award, Amelia Huang is quick to point out<br \/>\nthe Peaceful beef roll, which won a Chinese Restaurant Signature Dish<br \/>\naward, is but one of many dishes worthy of a shout-out.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI must agree.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHer family (mom, dad, brother) added this second Peaceful restaurant last month on Davie Street.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLike<br \/>\nthe first, at 532 West Broadway, the menu features upwards of 100<br \/>\ndishes in the Northern Chinese style &ndash; heartier, spicier, bolder than<br \/>\nthe Cantonese style making up most of Metro Vancouver&rsquo;s Chinese cuisine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAmelia&rsquo;s<br \/>\nparents opened the very first version 10 years ago on Main Street; then<br \/>\nthey moved to Kingsway and then to West Broadway. The second generation<br \/>\nis moving it forward.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAmelia&rsquo;s background in environmental<br \/>\ngeography (she studied it at Simon Fraser University) prompted the<br \/>\nowners to reduce the restaurant&rsquo;s carbon footprint.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;We&rsquo;re doing<br \/>\nan inventory of waste, energy use, emissions and the goal is to find<br \/>\nways to reduce it. We&rsquo;re adapting to the times,&rdquo; she says.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThey<br \/>\nsource locally &ldquo;as much as possible,&rdquo; buying B.C. pork and Alberta beef.<br \/>\nThere are lots of vegetarian dishes and most dishes, including meats,<br \/>\nare under $10.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAmelia recommends the spicy herb salad with pressed<br \/>\ntofu in a tangy sesame dressing and the cumin beef in sesame flatbread.<br \/>\nThere&rsquo;s an all-day dim sum menu, featuring a lot of dumplings,<br \/>\nflatbreads and rolls.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRecent additions to the menu include Chinese<br \/>\n&ldquo;ratatouille&rdquo; stir-fried in garlic sauce, and a peppery fish soup<br \/>\n&ldquo;cooked with a lot of pickled vegetables and black pepper,&rdquo; she says.<br \/>\n&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a different type of hot-sour soup. It&rsquo;s clear, but strong.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPeriodically,<br \/>\nyou&rsquo;ll see a shape-twisting noodle maker expertly wrangling a lump of<br \/>\ndough into yards and yards of noodles.
