A Taste of Hunan in the Heart of Cambridge

In Cambridge’s Kendall Square, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen brings the bold, fragrant cooking of Hunan to a neighbourhood shaped by technology, research and an international community. Its contemporary setting offers a welcoming introduction to a regional cuisine with plenty of character, whether diners know the flavours well or are discovering them for the first time.

Sumiao means “sketch” in Chinese, a fitting name for a restaurant developing its own interpretation of Hunan cooking. The menu explores the fragrance of fresh chillies, the savoury depth of fermented ingredients and the balance that makes a well-seasoned dish satisfying. Heat is part of the experience, with aroma, freshness and texture giving it variety.

The Beef on Fire captures the appeal of a Hunan home-style stir-fry, combining tender beef, fresh peppers and aromatic seasonings in a lively, full-flavoured dish. The Homemade Tofu offers a gentler contrast in texture, with soft tofu carrying the flavour of its sauce. Together, they give diners a sense of the range within the cuisine.

Selected for the 2026 Elite 12 UNITED STATES by the Chinese Restaurant Awards Taste Advisors, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen is recognised for bringing Hunan cooking to a wider audience.
