The Story Cafe
The Story Cafe is a new bar and grill in an unloved corner of Richmond half a block from the casino surrounded by light industrial buildings. They had the misfortune of accidentally choosing perhaps the worst date in human history to launch a new restaurant, March 13, 2020. Comfort foods fill the menu in this new enterprise. Look from the British Racing Green Spitfire parked out front and you’ll know you are in the right place.
What to order:
Try the fried chicken sandwich accompanied with an overly generous portion of excellent fries.
To savour: Call eatery (604) 697-8679 or Ubereats / Doordash / Skipthedishes
Menu: check out their takeout menu The Story Cafe
Address: 2800 Sexsmith Rd, Richmond, BC V6X 1V5
Lu Charcoal Grill
Lu Charcoal Grill is a new breed of Chinese restaurant in Richmond, it has as much in common with a North American sports bar as it does with what we think of being a run of the mill Chinese restaurant. The decor (and copious big screens) shout sports bar, the menu does too actually, just with an east Asian flavour. Grilled cumin scented lamb skewers instead of wings. Cold beer is universal to both however. Lot of small dishes for sharing while watching the game.
What to order:
Grilled lamb skewers. A Beijing street food classic. Lu’s version is less grzzly
than anywhere else in Richmond. They travel better than you expect them to as well.
To savour: Call restaurant (604) 285-3399 or Fantuan
Address: #100 – 8031 Leslie Road, Richmond, British Columbia V6X 1E4
Continental Seafood Restaurant
Continental Seafood Restaurant is cavernous, not the kind of spot you’d expect to have takeaway. To the left of the main entrance is a small door and a neon sign reading Takeaway. A tiny vestibule opens onto the kitchen, where for a sum of money so low you’ll feel guilty you can get a lunch box takeaway of the staff meal. Always friend rice with two other Cantonese takeout classics. Braised beef and daikon, fried fish fillet, stir fried veggies, sweet and sour pork, you never know what is on that days offer.
What to order:
The takeout lunch box, rice and two proteins, you’ll get whatever they have made that day.
To savour: Call restaurant (604) 278-6331 or walk in
Address: 11700 Cambie Rd, Richmond, BC V6X 1L5

Oyster Express, Stem Japanese Eatery
My wife and I have had extensive conversations about this, and after much deliberation came up with an answer. It’s gotta be somewhere that has a record of 100% excellence, the stake are too high to risk a substandard meal. Chinatown’s Oyster Express filles the criteria perfectly, a couple dozen briny bivalves washed down by a cold bottle of crisp white is the perfect reintroduction to leaving the house. Second place in the Mathews poll was the superb seasonal Izakaya in Burnaby, Stem Japanese Eatery.
