Announcing the awards, a gourmet giveaway, and the #Taste the city series
The annual Chinese Restaurant Awards return May 2018 to celebrate Vancouver’s exceptional Chinese and Taiwanese dining scene. This year is a milestone moment as the awards celebrate their 10th anniversary and a decade of uncovering culinary excellence.
The Chinese Restaurant Awards were launched in 2008 to raise awareness of Metro Vancouver’s high quality and vibrant Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine and to create a platform for cross-cultural culinary exchange. They are now the longest-running Chinese culinary awards event in the world and are widely considered the authority on local Chinese food. The yearly selections serve as comprehensive restaurant guides for visiting and resident food lovers looking to explore the best that Vancouver has to offer.
Diners’ Choice AwardsPresented by Hong Kong Airlines
Central to the Chinese Restaurant Awards is the highly-anticipated Diners’ Choice Award presented by Hong Kong Airlines, which recognizes the best local eateries as selected by the people that enjoy them. Diners are invited to nominate their favourite restaurants from January 29 – February 4. The 20 most nominated restaurants in each category will make it onto the nominee list. It is then up to the public to vote and decide which establishments will take home the top honours. There are 21 dining categories in total, including four new additions: Best Peking Duck, Best Shanghainese Stir Fry Egg White, Best Sichuan Mouthwatering Chicken, and Best Spring Rolls. These new categories represent both traditional and trending dishes.
Diners can nominate their restaurant online at www.ChineseRestaurantAwards.com. Voting takes place from February 5 – March 4 online and on WeChat. The Diner’s Choice Awards winners will be announced on March 5.
Thanks to supporting partner Hong Kong Airlines, voters will also have the chance to win a pair of round trip tickets from Vancouver to Hong Kong and a first class dinner either in Vancouver or Hong Kong. Those entering the contest on WeChat will win a dinner for 10 at Vancouver’s “Best New Restaurant,” while those entering on Instagram will win a dinner for two at a Michelin-star restaurant in Hong Kong. #HKADinersChoice
Critics Choice Signature Dish AwardsPresented by Alberta Canola Growers
The hunt for this year’s Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards is already underway. Acclaimed food critics Alexandra Gill, Brendon Matthews, and Lee Man have already begun scouring the city in search of the 10 top dishes; the ones that rise above the competition and represent the finest in Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine.
Vancouver has experienced substantial growth in regional Chinese cuisines in recent years and the critics are tasked with tasting their way through the best of what the city has to offer. The award is strictly focused on the taste of the dish and does not take ambiance, service, or plating into account. The result is a selection of 10 must-taste dishes. #ABCanolaCriticsChoice
Award winners will be announced at the Chinese Restaurant Awards ceremony in May 2018.
#Taste the City
Always seeking to inspire and offer diners more, the Chinese Restaurant Awards launched the #Taste the city series last year. The series highlights the new visionaries championing regional cuisine in Hong Kong, Hangzhou, and Shanghai through the eyes of Canadian food influencers.
Vancouver-based foodie Emma Choo won last year’s #TasteHKG contest and traveled to Hong Kong as the Chinese Restaurant Awards Social Media Ambassador. She spent five days exploring the city’s vibrant gastronomy scene and sharing her experiences with fans back home. The awards then turned their attention to the culinary capitals of Hangzhou and Shanghai. #TasteHGH and #TasteSHN Ambassador Melly Woo tasted her way around these two renowned food cities last November 2017 and chronicled her journey on her popular blog and Instagram account. Next the awards plan to explore Taipei and will launch the #TasteTPE series this fall 2018. Stay tuned for more and follow the Chinese Restaurant Awards on Facebook and Instagram @chineserestaurantawards.
