Winners of Chinese Restaurant Awards’ Vancouver’s 20 Best announced
Diverse Judging Panel of Chinese and Taiwanese Food Critics and Frequent Diners
Sheds New Light on Vancouver’s best
Today, Chinese Restaurant Awards announces the Vancouver’s 20 Best award results with a brand new format encompassing 17 winning restaurants and an expanded and diverse judging panel. Providing a gourmet roadmap for locals and visitors, Vancouver’s 20 Best award winners reflect the diversity of Chinese regional and Taiwanese cuisines in Metro Vancouver. Also announced today is the Rising Star Chef of the Year award, exemplifying the future of Chinese cuisine.
“Vancouver’s 20 Best offers an authentic and heartfelt dining guide that represents the palate and taste of Chinese and Taiwanese diners in Vancouver. A priority for Chinese Restaurant Awards, which has been running for fourteen years, is to keep evolving and reflecting diners’ needs,” said Craig Stowe, Founder and President of Chinese Restaurant Awards.
“Since its inception, Chinese Restaurant Awards’ signature dish concept has helped diners discover the best dishes. With Vancouver’s 20 Best new award format, we have invited a diverse group of judges to vote for their favourite establishments in the given categories and recommend Signature Dishes from there. This list of recommended dishes will provide diners with an easy-to-follow guide to explore the best from each winning restaurant,” said Lee Man, Judging Chair of Chinese Restaurant Awards’ judging panel.
Led by our Judging Chair Lee Man, Judges Brendon Mathews and Alexandra Gill, the Awards invited frequent diners from various industries to contribute their perspectives and insights to Vancouver’s 20 Best dining guide. As well as having expertise in Chinese and Taiwanese cuisines, these judges were required to provide their fair and unbiased opinions, as they cannot receive any favours, compensation, or special treatment from restaurants. Besides the 18 Best core categories, they also voted for Best Restaurant of the Year and those that are “Worth to Explore.” Full list of judges can be viewed at this link.
Among Vancouver’s 20 Best, a handful of restaurants have received unanimous votes from the judges, such as Mott 32 for Best Fine Dining, Dynasty Seafood Restaurant for Best Cantonese and Best Dim Sum, Landmark Hotpot for Best Hot Pot, and Geng Shi Ji for Best Hunan Cuisine; they are all winners with a high ratio of votes. As the winner of Restaurant of the Year and Best Sichuan Cuisine, Fish Man is the powerhouse that judges from diverse backgrounds and preferences all recognize and agree upon. With its culinary excellence and passion for seafood, it has become the busiest restaurant on Richmond’s “food street” (Alexandra Road). A list of Signature Dish Recommendations of some winners is available on our official website, highlighting which dishes diners should order at each establishment, according to the judges who voted for that restaurant, and serving as an easily navigable dining guide.
By bringing together 21 new judges, Vancouver’s 20 Best dining guide explores the vibrant Chinese and Taiwanese dining scenes in Metro Vancouver. There will also be a break from the awards ceremony this year, and the winners will receive their award plaques individually.
Canola Eat Well presents the Rising Star Chef of the Year special award to Chef Li Bo, a 38 year old industry veteran who started his cooking journey at 18. His restaurant Fish Man has won Restaurant of the Year and Best Sichuan Restaurant awards in Vancouver’s 20 Best. His impeccable culinary skills and in-depth knowledge of Canadian seafood also won him two Critics’ Choice Awards in 2018 and 2021. Through his dedication and passion for refining his culinary skills, he is able to combine different cuisine styles, such as Japanese and Cantonese, into his vision of Sichuan seafood dishes.
