November 5 – Of Tea and Stockings

It’s the morning (and afternoon, and late night) beverage of choice for
countless people. I’m talking about Hong Kong milk tea–also known as
"pantyhose tea."

Served hot or iced, it’s a very strong brew of blended teas, strained
through a nylon filter, and softened with evaporated milk and perhaps
some sugar.

Hong Kong milk tea packs a powerful, caffeinated punch and is readily
available in Hong Kong-style cafes through the lower mainland. It’s also
the newest category in the Diner’s Choice Awards portion of the HSBC Chinese Restaurant Awards.

You can vote for your favourite Hong Kong milk tea vendor online until
November 12. Or check the shortlist for ideas or early morning (or late
night) snacking. The milky beverage is often included when you order a
dish at a Hong Kong-style cafe.

(I think it goes great with coconut buns, while Chinese Restaurant
Awards founding chair Stephen Wong is partial to egg tarts or corned
beef and egg sandwiches.)
